Synex Information AB

Synex Information AB announces support for multi-byte Japanese and improved graphics in its flagship product Synex ViewPort

The upcoming release of Synex ViewPort features significant improvements that strengthen ViewPort's market position as a versatile plug-in SGML browser component. Version 1.30 adds multi-byte capability to support Japanese using shift-JIS, which is the predominant form in use today for encoding Japanese.

In addition to support for Japanese, new raster graphics formats such as TIFF CCITT Group 3 and 4, JPEG, EPS preview, XBM, BMP, and PNG have been added to Synex ViewPort, and also the ISO standard vector format CGM. The comprehensive support for CGM from Henderson Software covers all three CGM encodings and all CGM elements as well as leading industry profiles such as ATA, PIP, and CALS.

In ViewPort, graphics can be shown inline and in separate windows for zooming and panning. ViewPort's built-in hot spot capability works across all supported graphic formats as well as for formats integrated through third parties.

Synex ViewPort is the first cross-platform SGML/HyTime browser engine for adding SGML support to any application. A ViewPort-based application can process and display SGML data from any source; even in a single document, some parts may be retrieved from databases, others from files, through networks, or even created on demand, when needed. The engine accepts both SGML and an efficient preprocessed binary format designed for CD-ROM or network delivery.

This advanced toolkit is designed to meet the complex design requirements typical of CBT (Computer Based Training) and IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) applications. The API offers more than 250 API functions and 50 callbacks for rendering, navigation, and content retrieval.

The ViewPort technology also powers well-known SoftQuad Panorama, the first SGML browser for the World Wide Web.

Availability

Synex ViewPort Version 1.30 is expected to ship for Windows (3.1x/NT/95), Macintosh 68K/PPC, and Unix/Motif during Q2 1996.
