At the recent SAE J2008 Task Force meeting, held 27 February 1997 in Detroit in conjunction with the annual SAE Congress, automotive and component manufacturers were advised that although the EPA has not made the Draft SAE J2008 standard a requirement for selling vehicles in the United States, the California Air Regulations Board (CARB) has made J2008 a requirement. At a recent meeting, CARB voted to mandate the delivery of automotive service information in a digital format in compliance with SAE J2008 as a requirement to selling vehicles in California beginning in the year 2002. CARB, following its tradition of having environmental requirements that are stricter than national requirements set by the EPA, are the first to make the delivery of SGML service information a pre-requisite to the sale of automobiles in a state.
