Martin Bryan, The SGML Centre, in HTML, XML or SGML - what s the difference? stressed that with well-formed documents, without a DTD, incremental browsing can begin with the first complete element. However, in SGML entities can be assigned data attributes, which is equivalent to passing parameters to applets. Data attributes are not currently in XML, but Martin Bryan would like to see them added. He also noted that with the new XML Link development, linking support is far more flexible that with HTML.
