President's Report

New Name, New Look

Welcome to the first issue of interCHANGE. In Keeping with our commitment to improve the Newsletter started last year, we have modified the look and given our newsletter a new name. We would greatly appreciate any comments you might have in interCHANGE. Please feel free to contact Eamonn on his new editorial email address: editor@isgmlug.org

SGML/XML '97

The SGML/XML '97 Conference was quite spectacular this year. Registrations were near the 1100 mark and adding those who worked at or visited the exhibition, the total number of people at SGML/XML'97 comes to approximately 2100. That is the greatest number of pople ever gathered in one place to hear about SGML and/or XML. Congratulations to the organisers, the Graphic Communications Association (GCA); the conference co-sponsor, SGML Open; the conference Chair, B. Tommie Usdin; and the conference co-chairs, Debbie Lapeyre and Michael Sperberg-McQueen for staging such a well-rereceived and successful event.

ISUG Website

Robin Cover, our Web Manager is leaving the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Through SGML Open, sponsors will be funding Robin's work on the SGML/XML Web Page. Sponsors announced to date are: Graphic Communications Association, ISOGEN, and Inso.

Coincident with that, we will also be moving the ISUG Web site. It will be kept on TechnoTeacher's systems housed at ISOGEN. Peter Newcomb of TechnoTeacher will be helping us set up the site. Robin will continue to be our Web Manager. Our new URL will be: http://www.isgmlug.org. Once on this public site, thee will be a link to the private areas of the site. The members-only areas will be password restricted. You will receive your passwords in the post (if we do not have an email address for you) or by mail once the private members site is open. Initially, the content of the private site will be the two most recent issues of interCHANGE and access to the working area for our ISO liaison activities. Once this area is open, we will give you more information on it. We would greatly appreciate getting email addreses for our members, so please send your email addess to: info@isgmlug.org.

Member Survey

The ISUG is constantly looking for ways to return benefit to our members. We hope that you will take the time to complete the enclosed survey questionnaire. We will report back the findings of the survey to you in future issues of interCHANGE and we will investigate ways to make the results available on our website. Should you have any questions on the survey, please address them to: infro@isgmlug.org or send a fax to us at: +44 1793 512 516.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 1998. I hope that all of you will enjoy a healthy, peaceful and prosperous year.
